It is common for people to not update their decor because they think it requires a lot of time and money. But that’s not always the case. There are lots of affordable ways to update your decor quickly and create a whole new look. Try some of the ten ideas below this weekend to freshen up a room:

1. Move The Furniture

If it is positioned right up against the walls, pull it away. Move it into different angles and positions that aren’t necessarily aligned with the walls. For example, you can position your sofa diagonally across a living room. If the room is narrow, this will actually give the effect of widening the area. Be bold and try something different with your furniture.

2. Get Out The Paint

Pick a wall, get your favorite paint color and give it a coat. This will make it a focal point and instantly change the look of the room. To complement what you have done, put up an interesting poster or painting on the wall. You could also place a nice piece of furniture against the wall. (Note: Before choosing the paint, be aware of other colors already shared in the room. You don’t want it to clash and look awful, but rather complement what is already there.)

Indoor Plants3. Introduce Some Plants

Plants and greenery bring a breath of fresh air and color to a room. Don’t despair if you kill more plants than you grow, silk plants, flowers and trees are also very effective for achieving a ‘greenery’ look. And in fact some of the artificial plants are so good in quality now, it can be difficult to tell if they are real or not.

4. Put Down A Big Rug

An area rug is a wonderful way of defining a conversation area. Using a big area rug is a great way to define an area or section in a room. Again, take note of the colors already there and choose on that will complement the room. One great way to use a large rug is to put it beneath a coffee table. You could even lay it on an angle for even greater effect.

5. Dress Up The Walls

Hang pictures that reflect your personality. Hanging up pictures, mirrors, frames or posters is a great way to jazz up a room. It also reflects your personal tastes and style. If you choose to hang a mirror, play around with the positioning. Ideally it should sit in a position that reflects a nice view or area, even the garden outside.

6. Show Off Your Collectibles

Get all your favorite figurines, ornaments and special objects out of the cupboard and show them off. Again, these are a reflection of you and often have interesting stories associated with them, so put them on display. Pick out an area to display them and put related pieces together in small sets of three to five. If you have quite a few, it is a good idea to vary the shapes for interest.

7. Add Some Plush Pillows

The good news about decorative pillows is that they are an easy way to add textures and patterns to a room. Decorative and plush pillows are probably one of the easiest ways to change up your decor. They introduce color, texture and pattern into a room and can completely change the look. Use them to jazz up chairs, lounges, sofas and beds and there is no need to do a major makeover.

8. Replace Lamps

Another thing that is really easy to change up is lamp lighting. Either add in some new lamps or replace existing to create mood and interest in different corners of the house. Try and find some new shades or bases that make a statement.

9. Toss Over A Throw

Just like pillows, throws are a quick and easy way to add color and texture to your rooms. There are so many different types of fabrics and textures to choose from. go on the hunt for a style, pattern and color you like for an instant update.

10. Get Rid Of Clutter

Clutter has a way of eliminating the desired mood and effect of any room. A room full of clutter and piles of irrelevant ‘stuff’ is a quick way to ruin the look of any room. So get rid of it and either throw it out or find other places to store it. Typical culprits include toys, papers, magazines and electronics. Get them a new home and your room will take on a completely new mood.

Try some of these quick decorating ideas this weekend and you’ll have an updated room in no time.
